Surface Design for Individual Options

For my individual options I chose fashion. I chose the theme 'Deco Boudior' as it was mainly inspired by 1920s jewelery and the flapper movement. I spent most of the time in the archive drawing from 1920s jewelery and also visited London to draw from old buildings such as Liberty's. I decided to digitally print some designs and screen print others. I wanted a contrast and think the collection looks good. I love my colour palette!!

I will get my drawing sheets uploaded so you can see how I developed my designs.

Surface Design for Gift

I struggled with this assignment at first. My theme was 'Secret Garden' but with it been out of season it was hard to take photographs of flowers. I knew I wanted to design two different collections. In my mood board, you can see the two colour palettes. In the bottom left, the colours are dark woodland colours then moving into the top right you can see my contrasting colour palette, soft pastel colours.

Two designers from Hallmark came in to view our work and offer out a placement, it was a great experience to be able to chat to them about my work and ask questions about the industry.

Level 5 - I missed two weeks of this project due to my work experience. This has been my favorite assignment so far. I'm not sure why but I have such a passion for WW2 it's not classed as normal. I thought choosing the theme 'Romantic Aviation' would be perfect for me as I loved the colour palette for the trend and already had lots of primary research from my grandad. I also visited Eden Camp and got lots of useful pictures that helped me design. I used bits of old leather in my prints making my designs tactile and quirky.

By the end of this assignment I was nocturnal. The hard work got paid off though when my work was chosen to go to Indigo in Paris. It was interesting to see how the industry worked and also look at the latest trends and designs that were out. I am pleased I had the oppotunity to take part in this event.

Level 5 - This was a live assignment which got sent to Bradford Textiles Society. I haded in four boards - drawings, layouts, development and finals. This brief was given  to me at the end of Level 4, I began researching over the summer and collected lots of primary and secondary reasearch.

I love the bright colours and the way my screen prints turned out. I was inspired by the range 'What-A-Hoot by Harlequin. I could see these designs being used in childrens bedrooms and nurserys as I think there sweet with a playful colour palette.

Surface Design for Fashion

When I applied to study Textiles and Surface Design I knew fashion was for me, but I also wanted to try different arrears of design to make sure. I felt most comfortable with this project. It came natural to me and in one session I had so many ideas in my head I reeled of 7 fashion designs. This is also when I started drawing on A1 sheets instead of sketch books. I work SO much better on sheets!

Surface Design for Interiors

Level 4 - I was really excited about starting this project. I visited St Paul's Cathedral and was inspired by my theme 'Boroque.' I collected lots of research but when I started drawing, my drawings were subtle and didn't reflect the theme I chose. So after a lot of stress and mental blocks I changed my theme to 'Rococo.'

I was pleased with the outcome. I had never printed a full length before so it was useful to learn how to line up the screen so the print would run smoothly. Throughout the assignment I also learnt how to mix different dyes in the lab and also cut through a complicated design for repeat.

Textiles and Surface Design

Here are some of my embroidery samples from Level 4. We used line drawings of foliage to create embroidered samples. I found it easy to select small sections to embroider so I could concentrate on capturing all the detail from my drawing sheets.

This is one of my drawing sheets. I love line drawings!! I always seem to create quirky images when I draw with my mind instead of sight.

This was my first embroidering. The techniques I learnt were the basics, so I am going to create my own embroidery samples over the summer and also have a go at building up tactile surfaces.

Sunshine

Who would of thought a heatwave would make me recollect my thoughts and make me eager to blog?
I am making a promise to update this blog weekly to let you know what is going on in my life instead of yearly posts trying to cram everything in.

So this is my LAST yearly update....

This past year I have entered the Bradford Textiles Society competition, shown my gift designs to Hallmark and went to Paris in February were I took three final fashion designs to the worlds premier fabric show, Indigo, Premier Vision. I have visited endless amounts of  museums in London and also went to the Cleveland Degree Show to see the work produced by the Textile and Surface Design students.

I completed a two week placement in London at Pattern Textiles. The designers were lovely and gave me lots of tips on how to get into the industry. I learnt lots of new techniques which I incorporated into my assignments at university. My new love of Pellicci's in Bethnal Green is also down to the designers, I enjoyed plenty of meals and champagne whilst on my placement there.

I have finished my second year at Cleveland College of Art and Design and I'm very pleased with my marks! I've had few weeks off to relax in Tenerife and Majorca. I feel very rejuvenated and now I'm all set to start preparing for my minor project...

Little hints of relaxation is the key.
